Always Pray and Never Lose Heart
“Then Jesus told them a parable to show that they should always pray and not lose heart. … ‘Will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? … I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly.’” — Luke 18:1, 7-8
Here we are: Sunday morning, coffee in one hand, calendar open in the other, trying to juggle work, home, faith, the to-do list that never ends. As one of the many women balancing so many hats, I find it especially comforting when I read a portion of Scripture that speaks directly to my heart. Today’s reading invites us to keep showing up: to keep praying, to keep trusting, to keep seeking God’s presence in the real noise of our lives. Let’s see how this parable speaks to our everyday hustle, shall we?
The Heart of the Message: Persistent Prayer
Jesus begins with a clear instruction: we ought always to pray and not lose heart. That word always catches me. Because throughout my typical day, yours too I bet, prayer doesn’t always look like quiet kneeling in a calm and collected space. Instead, it probably looks like grumbling a “help me, God” in the car during rush hour. It may sound like a sigh of exhaustion as you load the laundry for the third time. The widow in the story reminds us: persistence isn’t about nagging God; it’s about staying connected, staying faithful, even when the answer seems slow.
What can persistent prayer look like during your average day?
– Before you open your laptop or start a chore, whisper a simple prayer: “Here I am, Lord. I know You are always with me.”
– When your mind drifts while your children are calling your name, or a meeting feels endless, take one quiet breath and say, “Stay with me, Jesus.”
– Choose one concern this week to bring before God each day…and then leave it alone until an appointed time, praying regularly for His grace. Trust the steady rhythm of prayer more than the need for instant answers.

God’s Justice & Our Waiting
In the parable, the widow approaches a judge who doesn’t fear God and doesn’t care about people, but eventually grants her justice because she keeps at it. Then Jesus asks: will not God bring justice for His chosen ones, who cry out day and night? Yes, He will, and quickly. But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?
This Gospel feels like a mirror of real life: we wait at home, we wait at work…always waiting for clarity, for peace, for something to finally move. But the truth is, God never forgets. The waiting itself becomes holy work. Somewhere in that in-between, God is already bringing about His justice, right on time.
What can you do to be better at waiting?
– Make a “waiting” list. Name one area where you feel you’re in limbo (job change, reconciliation, health, finances). Journal it, and leave it alone.
– Instead of seeing the waiting as “nothing is happening,” see it as “something is being formed.” Speak it out loud. What gets said, becomes manifested.
– When the answer doesn’t come “quickly” by your clock, remember: God’s “quickly” may look different. Trust the process.
Faith That Shows Up in Real Life
The final line of the parable stings a little: “Will he find faith on earth?” The questions implies both an invitation and a challenge. For women balancing faith and everyday demands, faith isn’t just a Sunday thing. We are deep in it while we are folding laundry, the trust we give Him when there’s a bill we can’t quite pay, the willingness to bring our messy hearts into the chapel or the Board meeting.
Our faith in every day life may look like…
– Choosing integrity, even when no one sees it.
– Saying “Thank You” when you’re exhausted.
– Stepping out to serve when you just want to rest.
Reflection Questions
- What area of your life most needs persistent prayer right now?
- How do you respond when you feel the answer is delayed? Do you lose heart or keep returning to God?
- In the roles you play (work, home, community), where can you show faith in a practical, visible way this week?
- How can you name and give to God the “waiting list” in your heart, trusting His justice and timing?
Prayer
Loving God, you who hear the cries of your chosen ones
and grant justice to those who call out day and night—
teach my heart to pray without giving up.
When I’m weary from work or overwhelmed at home,
remind me of your presence.
Help me show faith — not just in words,
but in the quiet doing of everyday life.
Strengthen me now to keep believing,
keep serving,
keep trusting.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
