Catholic Values in the Workplace

Balancing a career, family, and faith is no small feat, especially as a mother and leader. I know firsthand that it can feel overwhelming at times. But amongst all of the busyness, there’s an opportunity to bring our Catholic values into every aspect of our lives, even in the workplace. As a working mother with leadership responsibilities, I’ve found that honoring my faith in the workplace isn’t just possible; it’s the foundation that keeps me grounded and focused on what truly matters.

Embracing Faith in Leadership

In my role as an educational leader, I strive to embody what the Church teaches about Servant Leadership. Jesus calls us to serve others humbly, and I take that very seriously in my everyday work. What does this look like? Leading with kindness, listening closely to those around me, and helping others grow. Believe it or not, it also involves celebrating the work of others around me rather than seeking my own sense of accomplishment first.

As busy as life can get, I never forget the power of serving those around me. Whether it’s lending a listening ear to a team member or offering a word of encouragement, small acts of service speak volumes. It’s about making sure that everyone, no matter their position, feels valued and heard.

I always say, “Our work is hard enough. Let’s do what we can for each other to help our students as best as possible.”

I’ve learned that leading with humility doesn’t mean stepping aside. It’s about showing up with a heart that’s open, ready to serve, ready for feedback, and committed to helping others grow. I deeply believe that the Catholic call to serve isn’t confined to only family or parish life. It extends into our work life as well. And when we serve others in the workplace, we’re honoring Christ in places where it may actually matter the most.

Balancing Family and Work with Purpose

Being a working mom often feels like I’m juggling a million things at once. I know many of you can relate! Between meetings, school drop-offs, laundry piles, and preparing meals, there’s little time to catch a breath. But I’ve come to realize that balancing work, family, and faith isn’t about doing everything perfectly. It’s about keeping what’s most important at the center of everything.

Catholic values are easy to keep at home, but much harder to adhere to in hectic work environment. In our home, we try to weave faith into the rhythms of daily life. From morning prayers to cooking meals together, we’re always looking for small ways to honor God in our home life. These moments become an opportunity to reflect on God’s goodness and nurture our children’s faith.

At work, it takes more work to bring that same intentionality. It starts with remembering that my work is not just about what I do, but why I do it. Leading a school is not just a career; it’s an opportunity to serve, to use my gifts to help others, and to make a difference in the lives of those around me.

I’ve learned to set intentional boundaries. I’m a perfectionist that has a tendency to laser focus on things. In other words, I’m not great at multi-tasking. This means that when I’m at work, I’m 150% at work. This also means when I’m at home, I’m 150% at home. In this way, I’m able to live a life that’s balanced, centered, and deeply fulfilling. There’s no need for mom guilt. When we live our lives in alignment with our values, we can embrace both our roles with joy and purpose.

Living Out Catholic Principles of Justice and Mercy

The Catholic faith teaches us to advocate for justice, to be merciful, and to lift up the marginalized. With my work in inner city schools, these principles aren’t just abstract ideals. This is my reality. I’ve found that one of the most meaningful ways to live out Catholic values in the workplace is through advocacy, inclusion, community building, and being responsive.

In my role, I have the privilege of fostering a space where people feel seen and valued. I advocate for fairness, listen to voices that often go unheard, and encourage an environment where mercy and compassion lead the way. When we approach challenges with an open heart and a spirit of understanding, we create a workplace that reflects the love and care Christ shows to each of us.

I’ll be honest. Sometimes, not everyone is happy about it. Advocacy often means pushing perceptions. Inclusion also means holding people accountable. Being responsive also means being flexible in our plans for the day. There’s a lot of feelings in education, and it’s impossible to make everyone comfortable. Rather, it’s in our discomfort that often produces the best results.

There’s a deep call of justice in our work. When we make decisions, we have to consider their impact on others. Am I creating opportunities for those who are under-served? Am I making choices that reflect God’s love for all people, not just the ones who are easy to help? Catholic values push us to think beyond the bottom line and prioritize the well-being of all people. It requires a level of self-reflection that goes beyond our own understanding of what “should be.”

Integrating Prayer and Reflection

In the midst of a busy workday, it can be hard to find moments of stillness. But prayer and reflection are what keep me centered, focused, and aligned with my Catholic values. Even just a few moments of quiet can make a world of difference.

I make it a habit to start each day with a simple prayer. I ask God to guide my actions, my decisions, and my interactions. Throughout the day, I take brief moments of pause – usually right before I speed over to the school cafeteria – to reconnect with God. These small moments of reflection serve as a reminder that everything I do is an opportunity to serve God and others.

It’s through these moments that I can stay grounded in what truly matters, and I’ve found that they provide a sense of peace that helps me navigate even the most chaotic days.

Leading with Joy and Gratitude

Joy is a fruit of the Holy Spirit, and it’s something I try to carry with me into every area of my life, especially for my colleagues at work. It’s easy to get bogged down by stress, deadlines, expectations, and other people’s concerns. But when I choose to lead with joy, I find that it transforms my work and my relationships. It even surprises some people!

I’ve learned that joy doesn’t depend on circumstances. It’s a choice. Even on the toughest days, I try to lead with a spirit of gratitude, knowing that every task, every conversation, and every challenge is an opportunity to reflect God’s love in the world.

It goes without saying, and when students or others pass me by, the first thing they should see is a smile!

Joy doesn’t just uplift me. It uplifts those around me. When I approach work with a grateful heart and a joyful spirit, I encourage others to do the same. This creates an environment where people are motivated, inspired, and encouraged to thrive. It’s a small but powerful way to bring the light of Christ into the workplace, even if people don’t know it.

Bringing the Catholic Way into the Workplace

Being a working mother, a leader, and a Catholic woman is no small task. It’s one that’s filled with grace, purpose, and meaning. We can honor God in everything we do as long as we remember to not just lead, but embrace servant leadership. To not to plug away, but to model the values of justice, mercy, and joy.

No one is perfect, but we can all be intentional. With each small act of kindness, each decision made with integrity, and each moment of prayer, we honor God’s calling for our lives.

If you’re juggling work, family, and faith, take heart! You are not alone. We are in this together, and together we can create workplaces and homes that reflect the love and values of our Catholic faith.
